Abstract:   (420 Views)
Background and objectives: nowadays, by increasing the volume of accidents, pre-hospital emergency personnel have encountered with various problems related to work, including Cardiovascular disease, digestive disease, excessive fatigue and reduced sleep quality. In this research, the relationship between shift work, sleep quality and work ability index in pre-hospital emergency personnel has been investigated.
Methods: 102 operational personnel were included in study and after collecting demographic information, the number of work shifts and working hours, the quality of sleep and work ability were measured by using Petersburg sleep quality questionnaire (PSQI) and work ability index questionnaire (WAI). The relationship between variables was investigated using correlation coefficient, Fisher and one-way analysis of variance tests.
Results: The average total sleep quality score was 6.01±2.38, which indicated poor sleep quality. 34.3% of people's work ability index scores were at a poor level, 52% were at an average, and 13.7% were at good level. In examining the comparison between the two variables of shift work and sleep quality, there was significant difference, and between sleep quality and work ability index a strong relationship was observed.
Conclusion: by increasing the number of work shifts, the sleep quality has become weak and followed by that, the work ability index score has also decreased. Reducing working hours, managing the number of work shifts by considering resting and closure time and preventing people from working in monotonous shifts (only night work or only day work) in order to improve the quality of sleep and work performance is recommended.
