Abstract

Background: The use of visual monitors especially in relation to computer can cause health effects which have negative impacts on mental and physical performance of users. This study aims to determine the relation between ergonomic conditions in use of visual monitors and subjective feeling of fatigue in master science students as permanent users. Methods: In this study, 40 students in the Hamadan University of Medical Scienceswere selected based onsimplerandomapproach. For determining subjective feeling of fatigue, the standard questionnaire with reliability coefficient equal to 0.8 was distributed and completed among students. This questionnaire has 30 questions which was covered three criteria included drowsiness, difficulty of concentration and physical impairment. The data about environmental and ergonomic conditions of the workstations was also recorded. Exposure to electromagnetic radiation in very low frequency was measured using instrument model HI 3603 front of the studied monitors. Data was analyzed with SPSS 16 software. Results: The results showed mean score of drowsiness, difficulty of concentration and physical impairment were 17.8±6.5, 18.7±4.4 and 11.9±6.9, respectively. Totally, mean score feeling of fatigue was 48.5±15.7. The relation between continuous work time and feeling of fatigue was significant (P<0.05).The relation between work day time and feeling of fatigue was not significant (P>0.05). The relation between type of used monitor and feeling of fatigue was significant (P<0.05). Moreover, the relation between environmental conditions of the workstations and feeling of fatigue was not significant (P>0.05). However, descriptive results showed growing trend of feeling of fatigue in unsuitable environmental and ergonomic conditions. Moreover, exposure to electromagnetic radiation between to type monitors was statistically difference (P<0.05). Conclusion: Criterion of difficulty of concentration was allocated the maximum score of feeling of fatigue which can cause negative impacts on educational performance. Compliance with the ergonomic principles especially reduction continuous work time and use of updated monitors and optimization of lighting and acoustic conditions of the workstations can reduce feeling of fatigue among students, considerably.

Abstract

Introduction: Working with Visual Display Terminals (VDTs) can be associated with visual complaints particularly visual fatigue and symptoms including headache, disruption in continuing the work and ocular disorders. The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of visual fatigue and its related risk factors in computer users of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in 2013. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was achieved on 260 computer users. The data were collected by Visual Fatigue, demographic and job questionnaires. For data analysis, Spearman, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. Results: The mean (SD) age of the users was 36.74 (7.74) and daily working time with VDTs was 5.85 (2.28) hours. Visual fatigue score was 2.99 (1.97), so that 32.3% of computer users had severe eye fatigue. Meanwhile, 45.4, 21.9, 32.7 and 46.2 percentage of users suffered severely from eye strain, visual impairment, eye-surface disorder and extra-ocular problems. Visual fatigue incidence and its compliments were significantly increased with increasing of age, work experience and daily working hours with computer (p<0.05). Visual fatigue was higher in users wearing glasses than those not wearing glasses (p<0.001) and was lower in monitor to window angle of 90º than two other monitor to window positions of 0º (p=0.041) and 180º (p=0.036). Conclusion: The prevalence of visual fatigue among computer users was very high. Visual fatigue and its serious consequences can be prevented by applying the principles of ergonomics such as regular and short breaks, looking at distant objects, blinking regularly and reducing the direct and indirect glares.

Abstract

Introduction: Many calls already perform by cell phones that have need to radiation exposure by users. Because of health reasons and some doubts about effects, this study was conducted to determine the extent of the mobile phones radiations and self report symptoms of users. Material and Method: In this cross-sectional study, 80 available randomly users contain students and staffs of Hamadan University of medical sciences in 2012 were selected. Electro Smog meter TES-593 was used as radiation measurements tool. In order to assess health effects of mobile phones’ radiation, a self-administered survey questionnaire were used. Statistical analyses were performed using T-test, ANOVA and X2 tests by SPSS 11.5. Results: Results showed that the conversation mode had a highest level of electromagnetic indices in the studied cell phones. Compare means of power density that emitted from studied mobile phones had significantly difference (P=0.001). Relationship between exposure to the mobile phones radiation by symptoms of head-ache, anxiety and sleep disturb were significant (P=0.02, P=0.03, and P=0.002 respectively). Conclusion: Although, there is founding the relations between exposure to cell phones electromagnetic fields and some self-reported symptoms in line with same reports, These symptoms can not be absolutely attributed to the use of mobile phones. With these considerations it is recommended that for prevention of health risks from cell phones, safe type selection, control of call duration and frequency of use of these devices should be mentioned.

Abstract

Introduction: The importance of product design has been dramatically increased in recent years due to economic considerations as well as changes in user preferences, policy making and legal needs. In response to this, and as one of the most influential branches in the field of product design (in terms of the fit between product and user), ergonomics has also been developed proportionally. The aim of this study was to review the most important considerations and different traditional and new approaches in product design as well as challenges and limitations in this regard.

Methods: A review was made of the relevant electronic databases including Ergonomics Abstracts, PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus and Google Scholar using the following keywords: product, design, ergonomic, design procedures and design approach. The search was limited to full text articles in the English language, published in peer reviewed journals between 1990 and 2015.

Results: Comparison of the traditional and new approaches in product design indicated that the new approaches helped designers to choose the best product model based on various aspects and a more detailed interaction between user and product. Ergonomic considerations in product design also include engineering and psychological aspects as well as taking into account abilities and limitations of both products and users, to find a good fit between user and product.

Conclusions: The findings suggest that the traditional approaches in product design alone may not anymore guarantee the success of a product in the market, particularly in universal scale and for a wide range of users. In other words, consideration of various technical (in terms of user-product interaction) and legal (environment, sustainability, cost benefit, etc.) aspects in new ergonomic approaches may be taken into account to improve the quality and success of the products in the global market. Ergonomists may encounter with some challenges to achieve this goal, but high-quality ergonomics services can be considered as an effective solution in this regard.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: One of the important points in user-centric design is to pay attention to the physical and psychological conditions of the user and the errors caused by the product’s undesirable design. The bicycle shifting system is one of the most complex components that many interactions of users with it have an effect on them. This research recognizes the exact needs of cyclists and provides a solution to create effective user interaction.
Methods: In this research, using a combination method, a qualitative analysis was carried out using the AEIOU method, 50 cyclists of the Tabriz Islamic Art University were selected using non-random sampling method. Using a desirability testing of 3 subjects, a quantitative survey was done. After the preparation of the design requirements, by using SCAMPER technique, ideas were evaluated through DFV technique and the final idea was developed. 
Results: The results showed that users are faced with more psychological than physical problems during a gear shift. According to the desirability testing, the subject (2) with a score of 883, and the ratio of desirability of 1.212 compared to the subject (3) and 1.256 compared to the subject (1), was the most desirable product, which indicates the direct relation of the utility rate with the simplicity.
Conclusion: Since most users’ mistakes in understanding the logical displacement of the gears lead to poor bike switching conditions, the design of the product focuses on reducing user error and the number of additional operations and accelerating the user decision making process.

Abstract

Background & Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the ergonomics of armpits and aviators outdoor (park) based on anthropometry parameters of male users.
Methods: Among male users of these outdoor park equipment, 120 people from Tehran and in the age range over 20 years (48.38
±16.27) were selected as a sample. The research variables were the dimensions of the devices and the anthropometry of the male users. The plumb line, engineering meter, ruler, goniometer and static anthropometer kit (caliper) were used to measure the dimensions of the devices and the anthropometry of the users (according to Pheasant instructions). Then, according to the standards of ergonomics and bodybuilding, the science of motor biomechanics and the way of installation on the devices, the fit of the devices was evaluated. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data and single-group t-test (parametric statistics) and binomial statistics (non-parametric statistics) were used to test the hypotheses.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between most of the desired dimensions of the devices with the relevant and optimal dimensions of users (P value<0.05). Therefore, from the anthropometric point of view, these devices are not ergonomic for male users, and it is necessary to adopt a method for the standardization of these devices.
Conclusion: Most dimensions of underarms and outdoor aviators are not ergonomic from the anthropometric point of view of male users. This mismatch can lead to complications and physical injuries to users. Therefore, users should be careful when using these devices and avoid working with devices that do not fit their physical dimensions.

Abstract

Objectives: Today, many hardware and software products, including office automation software, and web-based websites are used by employees, including professors and employees of different departments in offices. Websites are considered one of the main competitive advantages in any organization. This study aims to investigate the usability of the Integrated Research Automation System (SYAT): A Heuristic Evaluation.
Methods: The present study was a descriptive- cross- sectional study with a heuristic evaluation performed on the integrated research system software (SYAT) by 3 evaluators. They then evaluated the intensity of each of the ten options and scored from 0 to 4. After each problem was classified as one of the 10 branches of Nielsen's evaluation by the evaluators, similar problems were eliminated and the average scores and the severity of the deterioration of the problems were calculated.
Results: A total of 92 usability problems were identified in evaluating the usability of the web-based software (system) using the components provided by Nielsen. The majority of the issues were related to the detection instead of reminder with 16 problems (17.32%). The lowest number of problems was related to both compatibilities between the system and the real world, and the clarity of the system status with 6 cases (6.52%).
Conclusion: The usability assessment method is inexpensive and simple and the problems caused by websites and applications can be evaluated as feedback to improve them. The more accurate the needs of SYAT system users are, the more effective the system will be and the more satisfied the users will be.

Abstract

Objectives: Healthy air is free of any pollutants, including odors, harmful gasses, dust and viruses, especially corona. This healthy air is provided by a purifier device. One of the problems of metropolises is the lack of healthy air, which is one of the most important human needs. The aim of this study was to design a new home air purifier with interactive and ergonomic features.
Methods: The purpose and nature of this research are applied and qualitative-descriptive, respectively. A survey method is used to collect data. The most important tool in the field study is verbal-visual (researcher-made questionnaire) and has benefited from the analysis of relevant experts, Delphi group. Its design method was the so-called Design up (Tarrahi Nameh in Persian) where it is based on the interaction design and user-centered approach and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to evaluate the different stages of the project.
Results: The achievement of this research is a new home air purifier with interactive and ergonomic features with Nik mark. On the one hand, it is easy to use and accelerates the purification operation with a larger area than the existing devices through different filters, and on the other hand, it is easy to assemble, economical and optimally designed. It has automatic and manual adjustment of fan speed and remote control, it has the ability to be used standing and wall-mounted, and it is environmentally friendly.
Conclusion: Eventually this design offered effectiveness, efficiency, safety/comfortability, utility, learnability and memorability as elements of usability. It also demonstrates features such as visibility, feedback, constraints, adaptability and affordance as the goals of interaction design. Finally, this design conducted a satisfactory user experience.

Abstract

Objectives: User engagement with digital technologies refers to the sense of belonging and individual satisfaction. Visual aesthetics, characterized by simplicity and diversity, plays a crucial role in the design of products and online sales strategies. This study investigates the relationship between visual aesthetics and user engagement with in a selected social network.
Methods: This correlational descriptive-analytical study examines the attractiveness of two pages with similar educational content but differing visual aesthetics criteria on one of the social networks. The first page (Researcher-made page) exhibits higher standards of attractiveness compared to the second page (Basic page). Data were collected through online questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: The study involved 116 participants, of whom 91 (78.4%) were female, with an average age of 26.8 ± 2.54 years. The majority of participants held a bachelor's degree (57.8%). The average visual aesthetics scores for the content pages (Researcher-made page) and (Basic page) were 95/92 and 84/9, respectively, indicating that Researcher-made page had greater visual appeal. Furthermore, the user engagement scores for Researcher-made page and Basic page were 107/9 and 100/02, respectively. A significant positive correlation was found between visual appeal and user engagement on both pages (P<0.001), while no significant relationship was observed between gender or education level and these metrics (P>0.05).
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the visual aesthetics of virtual content pages has a significant impact on user engagement. These findings underscore the importance of adhering to attractiveness criteria in content design, which can be beneficial for content creators, managers, and business owners.
